ACETA Application Now Available
The Center for Civic
Education, the Center on Congress at Indiana University,
and the National Education Association are accepting
applications for the 2008 American Civic Education
Teacher Awards until March 7, 2008. ACETA recognizes
three educators annually for their exemplary work in
preparing young people to become informed and engaged
citizens. The awards are given to elementary and
secondary teachers of civics, government, and related
subjects who have demonstrated special expertise in
motivating students to learn about the Constitution,
Congress, and public policy. Click here

“What’s the Deal with
Delegates?” The
Bryant Park Project/NPR - Jan 31, 2008
Howell
High School teacher Mark Oglesby expanded his civics
classroom to include the entire nation when he appeared
on The Bryant Park Project on NPR to explain the role of
delegates in the presidential nomination process.
Oglesby has served as a We the People: The
Citizen and the Constitution teacher for 18 years, first
in Washington state where he was also a delegate during
the 1996 presidential race, and now in Michigan where he
just won Howell Teacher of the Year honors.

We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution
Evaluation One Page Summary
|
In a new study, conducted by
RMC Research Corporation, We the People: The Citizen
and the Constitution students made greater gains
than comparison students in overall civic knowledge and
in the areas of (1) core values and principles of
democracy, (2) constitutional limits on governmental
institutions, and (3) rights and responsibilities of
citizens. Full report available December,

We the People: Project Citizen Evalulation One
Page Summary

A 2007 study conducted by RMC Research
Corporation of We the People: Project Citizen
students found statistically significantly greater gains
among participants than comparison students in their
knowledge of public policy. Project Citizen
participants also demonstrated superior writing ability
in articulating, researching, and advocating policy
solutions in essays addressing public policy problems.

Recognizing the importance of
helping young people become responsible, thoughtful
citizens, the Center for Civic Education joins the U.S.
Department of Education and Department of State in
celebrating International Education Week, November 12 -
16.
"International Education Week helps remind all
Americans of the important role of education in
fostering a more peaceful and prosperous world. The
Center for Civic Education is proud to work
cooperatively with the Department of State and
Department of Education in the more than 65 countries
where the Center's materials have been translated and
adapted to encourage more effective education for
democracy," said Richard A. Nuccio, Director of the
